Welcome back to the 12 DIYs of Christmas! This DIY is one of my favourites, and is an easy way to personalise a simple gift.
This is a great gift for the planty person in your life, and doesn’t matter if they already have the type of plant you use, because do they have that plant growing in a heart shape? No?! Then read on!
#7: Make a Plant Heart Present
You will need:
–Heart-shaped craft ring
-Floristry wire or similar
-Dowels or wooden stakes
-Viney, climbey plant
For this DIY you will need to choose a viney, climbey plant that can be wrapped around the heart shape. There are a lot to choose from. I used a climbing fig (ficus plumera), but note that you could use philodendrons, ivys, chain of hearts, bougainvillea, or any other climbing plant you see!
Don’t worry if the plant you choose isn’t advanced enough to cover the whole heart, it will have room to grow into it.
To start, insert two dowels or stakes into the soil of your pot plant. Make them around 4 inches (10cm) apart, and sit them close to the edge of the pot rather than in the middle.
If you like, you can spray paint the heart ring so the metal isn’t showing. I sprayed mine white to make it look nicer until the plant fully covers the heart.
Take a piece of wire and wrap it around the top of one dowel to connect the heart. Do the same with the other dowel.
Once the heart is attached, begin by taking a larger stem and winding it up and around the heart shape. Depending on your plant, you may need to loosely fix the stems on with some wire until they fully get hold.
Wrap a few stems either side until you like how it looks. Don’t be afraid to trim any pieces that aren’t working out, or leave some growing outwards like I did.
What do you think of this heart plant gift? Now I just have to decide if I’ll give it away or keep it for myself… Don’t forget to check out my other posts in the 12 DIYs of Christmas!
